AIChE – ASME Donald Q. Kern Award
In honor of Donald Q. Kern, pioneer in process heat transfer, this award recognizes outstanding contributions in the field of heat and mass transfer, and specifically for transport phenomena related to thermal processing and/or energy conversion; particular emphasis is given to contributions that have significant practical applications.
Established in 1973 by the Executive Committee of the Heat Transfer and Energy Conversion, now known as the Transport and Energy Processes Division of AIChE, the award honors and commemorates the pioneering life-long work of Donald Q. Kern in the field of process, enhanced or augmented, and applied heat transfer, as well as his exemplary multifaceted achievements as a researcher, educator, author, and practicing engineer. It was made a joint AIChE-ASME award in 2021 with the collaboration of the ASME Heat Transfer Division.
This award is now bestowed annually and jointly by the AIChE Transport and Energy Process Division (TEPD) and the ASME Heat Transfer Division (HTD). It is presented at the ASME Summer Heat Transfer Conference (SHTC) each year, where the awardee is required to present the Kern Memorial Award Lecture, the award includes a plaque and honorarium, and is managed by a joint TEPD-HTD committee.
