Lu Yansun, Leader in Engineering and Machinery, Receives The ASME President’s Award

NEW YORK, Dec. 10, 2012 – Lu Yansun, an engineer who played a foremost role in the growth of electric power equipment manufacturing in China while advocating the use of ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) technical standards in local industries, has received the ASME 2012 President’s Award recognizing significant achievement.

The award was presented Dec. 8, 2012, in a special ceremony at the Chinese Academy of Engineering. “Today we recognize the vision of Minister Lu and his leadership in promoting cooperation in engineering and technology for ASME in China,” said Marc W. Goldsmith, ASME president.

During the past half century, Lu has forged a strategy for China’s rapid growth in energy production, including programs for logistics engineering and equipment development, while serving in various capacities, including Vice Minister of Machinery Industry, Deputy of the National People’s Congress, President of the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society, President of the Chinese Society of Power Engineering, and President of the China Electric Equipment Industry Association.  He played a major role in the restructuring of the local machinery industry and the reform of China’s state-owned enterprises.

Lu promoted the use of ASME standards in many of these activities, assisting in the creation of the China Cooperative Network of ASME Code Items.  “Mr. Lu convinced most major manufacturers to adopt ASME standards and his work has helped China become the largest manufacturer of power equipment worldwide,” said Goldsmith.

Lu attended Shanghai Jiaotong University, graduating from the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 1956.  He began his career at Harbin Boiler Works, Harbin, China, where he advanced to become president.  He also served as president of the China National Electric Equipment Corp during the early 1980s.

Among many honors and distinctions, Lu is Honorary President of the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society and Senior Advisor to the China Machinery Industry Association and Chinese Society of Power Engineering, which are longtime partners of ASME.

In presenting a crystal obelisk and certificate to Lu, Goldsmith said: “This is a world that needs the kind of leadership you have been providing – in projects that cross engineering disciplines.”
