Michael Woodmansee, Ph.D., P.E., Named 2021-22 ASME Congressional Fellow

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Oct. 14, 2021) – The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) has named Michael Woodmansee, Ph.D., P.E., as a 2021-2022 ASME Congressional Fellow – Manufacturing. He officially began his fellowship on Sept. 1, serving in the office of the Honorable Chris Coons (D-Del.), who was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010 and currently serves on the Senate Appropriations, Foreign Relations, Judiciary, Small Business and Entrepreneurship, and Ethics committees. He is the chair of the Ethics Committee and the senior Democrat on two subcommittees: The Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology, and Law and the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations (SFOPS). Woodmansee will support a range of issues including smart manufacturing, small business access to capital, technology transfer, R&D, innovation, and supply chain resilience. He is jointly sponsored by the ASME Foundation and ASME Government Relations.

Most recently, Woodmansee managed Amazon Fresh operations for the Washington, D.C. region, where he currently volunteers as a business mentor for SCORE, providing guidance and support to current and prospective small business owners. Previously, he was director of European operations for Schlumberger, where he held a variety of roles in engineering and manufacturing, field operations, sales and marketing, human resources, information technology, and corporate transformation during his 15 years with the company. In addition to various domestic assignments across the U.S., he has also completed overseas assignments in Algeria, Brazil, Russia, and the United Kingdom. Prior to his time in the oilfield, Woodmansee was a staff scientist at Jaycor where he used computer modeling and optimization algorithms to predict stress fractures in military recruits. He gained experience in heavy manufacturing at GE Transportation, medical product development at Bristol Myers Squibb, and composites manufacturing at General Composites.

“ASME is pleased to welcome Michael Woodmansee to the distinguished roster of engineers who have provided valuable service to our nation through the Federal Government Fellowship Program,” says ASME Executive Director/CEO Tom Costabile. “Through these prestigious year-long engagements, our fellows have a unique opportunity to participate directly in the policy-making process and gain an insider’s perspective on government decision-making – and, in turn, they can apply that learning to their professional roles and better contribute to the mission and vision of their own organizations.”

Woodmansee joined ASME in 1994, previously served in the 2004-2005 Leadership Development Initiative, and was a member of the Young Engineer Correspondents. He has been an officer of the ASME San Diego Section and later an active member of the ASME South Texas Section.

“I'm honored to be selected as a 2021-2022 ASME Congressional Fellow and am grateful to the ASME Foundation and ASME Government Relations for their support,” says Woodmansee. “This fellowship represents a unique opportunity to contribute to important legislation, while engaging with people and processes operating at the highest echelons of government. It is also an unforgettable life experience. I am thrilled to be working with Senator Coons and his talented staff for the benefit of Delawareans.”
Woodmansee received a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering from Cornell University, as well as a Master of Science degree and Doctoral degree in mechanical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, where he was awarded a doctoral fellowship from the National Physical Science Consortium and Sandia National Laboratories and studied the effects of thermomechanical fatigue on microstructural evolution in solder interconnects in electronics. He has been licensed as a Professional Engineer in Texas since 2007.

About ASME
ASME helps the global engineering community develop solutions to real world challenges.  Founded in 1880 as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, ASME is a not-for-profit professional organization that enables collaboration, knowledge sharing, and skill development across all engineering disciplines, while promoting the vital role of the engineer in society. ASME codes and standards, publications, conferences, continuing education, and professional development programs provide a foundation for advancing technical knowledge and a safer world. In 2020, ASME formed the International Society of Interdisciplinary Engineers (ISIE) LLC, a new for-profit subsidiary to house business ventures that will bring new and innovative products, services, and technologies to the engineering community, and later established the holding company, Global Knowledge Solutions LLC. In 2021, ASME launched a second for-profit subsidiary, Metrix Connect LLC, an industry events and content platform to accelerate digital transformation in the engineering community and the exclusive agent for the Mechanical Engineering® brand of media products.
