MKSSS’s Cummins College of Engineering for Women Student Receives ASME Leadership Award

NEW YORK (April 20, 2022) – Arya Vyavahare, a senior-year mechanical engineering student at MKSSS’s Cummins College of Engineering for Women in Pune, India, has been named the recipient of the Charles T. Main Student Leadership Award by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The award recognizes “current undergraduate ASME student members whose leadership and service qualities have contributed to the program and operations of a Student Section of the Society, to enhancing student activities within their department and related to mechanical engineering students at their institution, the engineering profession and ASME.” Vyavahare received the first-place vermeil medal and $3,000 (USD) and was recognized in an award ceremony at ASME E-Fest Digital, a global virtual event attended by more than 1,100 engineering students and early-career engineers.

Vyavahare has been a volunteer with the ASME Cummins Student Section since her freshman year and served as chair of the Section in her senior year, organizing numerous networking and educational events with industry representatives and expanding membership. In her junior year, she led the organization of the first-ever all women’s ASME EFx® with several other colleges, which attracted 350 participants and helped motivate students to establish ASME Student Sections in their colleges. She was selected to attend the ASME Student Leadership Training Conference held virtually in 2020. She served as a panelist and speaker for the Linkedln Awareness session “Getting Noticed and Getting Ready” at ASME E-Fest Careers 2020. She interned in research and development at Piaggio Vehicles Pvt. Ltd., where she worked on the design modification of CNG cylinder mounting. She was a winner of the third-place prize at the ASME E-Fest Digital 2021 Oral Competition. She has been a recipient of the ‘Mercedes-in-Mech’ Scholarship program by Mercedes Benz starting in her sophomore year and was recruited to join the company after her graduation in July 2021.

“I intend to continue volunteering with ASME in the future, empowered with the will to learn, advance the ASME mission, and support engineers—especially women—to raise their career bar,” says Vyavahare.

About ASME
ASME helps the global engineering community develop solutions to real world challenges.  Founded in 1880 as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, ASME is a not-for-profit professional organization that enables collaboration, knowledge sharing, and skill development across all engineering disciplines, while promoting the vital role of the engineer in society. ASME codes and standards, publications, conferences, continuing education, and professional development programs provide a foundation for advancing technical knowledge and a safer world. In 2020, ASME formed the International Society of Interdisciplinary Engineers (ISIE) LLC, a new for-profit subsidiary to house business ventures that will bring new and innovative products, services, and technologies to the engineering community, and later established the holding company, Global Knowledge Solutions LLC. In 2021, ASME launched a second for-profit subsidiary, Metrix Connect LLC, an industry events and content platform to accelerate digital transformation in the engineering community and an agent for the Mechanical Engineering® brand of media products.
