The Covanta Plymouth Renewable Energy Facility Receives ASME Award

NEW YORK, May 20, 2010 – The Covanta Plymouth Renewable Energy facility in Conshohocken, Pa., has been recognizedfor a strong environmental and safety performance record.

The plant, which generates energy from the combustion of municipal waste, is the recipient of the 2010 Facility Recognition Award from the ASME Solid Waste Processing Division. The award was announced at the 18th North American Waste-to-Energy Conference held earlier this month in Orlando, Fla.

In addition to environmental and safety performance, the award recognizes technological innovation and the contribution of the facility to integrated waste management. The Covanta Plymouth Renewable Energy plant processes more than 1200 tons of municipal solid waste each day; the waste is used as fuel to generate electricity to meet the power needs of approximately 25,000 homes in the local area.

The facility has been designated as a VPP Star by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). In addition, the plant’s environmental management system received ISO 14001 registration.

The Solid Waste Processing Division, one of 37 technical divisions within ASME, is made up primarily of engineers involved in thermal conversion, resource recovery, recycling, energy recovery, and related areas.

About ASME ASME helps the global engineering community develop solutions to real world challenges. Founded in 1880 as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, ASME is a not-for-profit professional organization that enables collaboration, knowledge sharing and skill development across all engineering disciplines, while promoting the vital role of the engineer in society. ASME codes and standards, publications, conferences, continuing education and professional development programs provide a foundation for advancing technical knowledge and a safer world.
