Podcast: Developing a Better Battery
Lithium-ion batteries have become standard in rechargeable batteries, but lithium’s high cost has researchers looking to develop a cheaper alternative. Sodium-ion batteries are promising, but sodium’s larger atoms cause a battery to wear out faster. New research led by Reza Shahbazian-Yassar, associate mechanical engineering professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, shows that zinc nanowires can provide high electrical conductivity using sodium, and offers promise in developing low-cost sodium-ion batteries.
