Department of Commerce Hosting Workshop to Explore Challenges Standing in the Way of Commercial Space Technology

The Department of Commerce (DOC) Boulder Laboratories, the DOC Office of Space Commerce, and the University of Colorado Boulder recently announced that they will be hosting a one-day workshop to explore the key technology and measurement barriers standing in the way of the safe and successful deployment and operation of commercial space technology.

The event will touch on topics such as:

  • Managing Data for Space Traffic Management
  • Models and Algorithms for Space Situational Awareness
  • Spectrum for Space Services
  • Partnerships with DOC
  • Emerging technologies for Space Commerce
Through these topics the workshop hopes to identify some of the technical grand challenges for both space commerce and civil space traffic management, and work with DOC to coordinate the resources that should be applied to resolving each challenge.

Among the speakers attending the event are Walt Copan, Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, who will be lead a session discussion on emerging technologies for space commerce;  and Kevin O’Connell, Director of the Office of Space Commerce at DOC, who will discuss partnerships with DOC.

The event will be taking place September 12th at the NIST facility in Boulder, CO. All those interested in attending must register no later than 11:59pm on September 5th.
