NSF Announces Regional Innovation Engines Opportunity

In a bid to foster greater technology innovation and economic competitiveness, the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) has unveiled a new funding opportunity to establish additional NSF Regional Innovation Engines (NSF Engines) across the country. Building upon the success of the 10 inaugural awardees announced earlier this year, the NSF Engines program aims to expand its reach pending congressional appropriations.

This new round of funding will allow tribal nations and state and local government agencies to send in proposals while the original round required proposers to have an NSF Engines Development Award or previous support from the NSF. The agency anticipates up to $160 million in funding over the next ten years for the program, subject to annual appropriations from Congress. The latest funding opportunity aligns with the bipartisan priorities outlined in the "CHIPS and Science Act of 2022," which authorized the NSF Engines program.

Since its launch in May 2022, the NSF Engines program has prioritized transparency and collaboration. In this round of funding, NSF plans to publish data received from submitters throughout the proposal and review stages, promoting openness and facilitating collaboration among stakeholders. For more information regarding proposals, visit the NSF Engines program website.
