ASME Applauds White House Standards for Emerging Technology Roadmap

The Biden-Harris Administration recently released a new draft Implementation Roadmap for the U.S. Government’s May 2023 National Standards Strategy for Critical and Emerging Technology (USG NSSCET). The roadmap sustains and reinforces the U.S. Government’s commitment to standards development led by the private sector and enhanced by partnerships with public institutions. It further calls for robust engagement in the standardization of critical and emerging technologies (CETs) to protect U.S. national and economic security.

In public workshops around development of the first-ever NSSCET, ASME commended the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for its pivotal role in bringing together the standards development community to craft a forward-thinking roadmap. The new NSSCE strategy roadmap provides immediate and long-term recommended actions to reinforce support for the U.S. private sector-led system of standards development and to address challenges related to standards development activities for CET. This particularly focuses on the rapidly evolving international standards development landscape.
The roadmap outlines key areas for long-term U.S. government action, including:
  • standards coordination across the federal government and with the private sector;
  • standards policy coordination between the USG and foreign governments;
  • recognizing and incentivizing federal agency engagement in standardization;
  • providing strong and sustained funding for CET R&D and pre-standardization coordination;
  • engaging academia as a critical partner in standards development efforts;
  • educational efforts in standards and develop and sustain communications about standards; and
  • removing barriers to participation in standardization.
ASME is pleased to support the NSSCET Implementation Roadmap, which recognizes the critical role of private sector innovation in shaping standards alongside government-supported research and development.
