Science Committee Advances Key Energy Bills

The House Science, Space, and Technology Committee recently advanced two bipartisan bills supported by ASME and a broad coalition of science and engineering organizations.  The bills, H.R. 9671 and H.R. 9710, are designed to support innovation in the energy sector by fostering development in two cutting-edge technology areas – artificial intelligence and advanced nuclear energy.

H.R. 9671, the Department of Energy Artificial Intelligence Act of 2024, focuses on providing clear guidance and robust investment in artificial intelligence (AI) research and development within the Department of Energy (DOE). This bill aims to harness the transformative potential of AI to enhance efficiency, security, and innovation across the nation's energy landscape.

H.R. 9710, the Small Modular Reactor Demonstration Act of 2024, amends the Energy Policy Act of 2005 to support the advancement of small modular reactors (SMRs) and micro-reactors. The goal of this legislation is to accelerate the research, development, demonstration, and commercial application of these technologies, ensuring the United States remains a leader in next-generation nuclear energy solutions.

Both bills highlight the commitment of the House Science Committee to drive forward-thinking solutions that will enhance energy security, sustainability, and technological leadership in the U.S. energy sector.
