Vanguard Pioneer Medal Awarded to Jon E. Batey

Jon E. Batey was awarded the 2023 ASME BPV Committee on Nondestructive Examination Vanguard Pioneer Medal.
Jon E. Batey was presented with the 2023 ASME BPV Committee on Nondestructive Examination Vanguard Pioneer Medal for long term distinguished service and achievement in Nondestructive Examination (NDE) during the November Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Week in Houston, Tex.
After earning his bachelor’s degree in physics (with honors) from Southwest Texas State University in 1977, Batey began his NDE career as a quality engineer in 1977 with the Union Carbide Nuclear Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Batey conducted NDE research in crack growth mapping using ultrasound, reactor fuel rod monitoring using radiography, and minimizing operator induced error in ultrasonic examinations.
In 1984, Martin-Marietta Energy Systems directed ORNL operations as the prime government contractor. From 1984 – 1988, Batey managed In-Service Inspection programs for five research nuclear reactors. He served as the Quality Department’s NDE group supervisor, Safety Officer, Radiation Control Officer, and Environmental Protection Officer and advised the Quality Departments of other Laboratory Divisions (K-25 and Y-12) concerning NDE issues. During this time Batey also prepared and approved for implementation NDE procedures in compliance with National Codes and Standards and Government Regulations.
From 1988 – 2001, Batey was a Corporate NDE Specialist for the Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) at the Charleston, W.Va. facility. He developed and maintained corporate NDE procedures and advised design and project engineering and plant inspection personnel on NDE issues.
Batey began his ASME Code participation in 1979 and has held numerous positions. He is a former member of numerous other ASME Volunteer Committees including chairing the BPV Committee on Nondestructive Examination and membership in numerous working group under the BPV Committee on Nondestructive Examination and Boiler and Pressure Vessel Standards Committee.
Batey’s leadership of BPV Committee on Nondestructive Examination was proactive and kept the group abreast of current technology. Technological advances included but not limited to: TOFT and PAUT Ultrasonics, CR and DR Radiography, and other NDE methods were updated as applicable.
Batey holds several industry qualifications and certifications in NDE including ASNT Level III Certificates in Radiography, Ultrasonic, Liquid Penetrant, Magnetic Particle, Leak Testing and Visual Testing.
Past Recipients of the ASME BPV Section V Vanguard Pioneer Medal are the following:
2016: Albert Birks
