Nominate a Deserving Engineer for an ASME Award

ASME is currently accepting nominations for seven notable Society awards, including the Freeman Scholar Award and the Ralph Coats Roe Award. The deadlines for submitting nominations for these honors will fall between Aug. 30 and Sept. 15.

Nominations for the Fluids Engineering Award, recognizing outstanding contributions to the field of fluids engineering, are due Aug. 30. The honoree will receive a $1,000 honorarium, a bronze medal and a certificate. Nominations should be submitted to Yu Lee, award chair, at yu.lee@navy.mil.

Sept. 1 is the nomination deadline for five other awards: the Freeman Scholar Award, the Y.C. Fung Young Investigator Award, the Patrick J. Higgins Award, the H.R. Lissner Medal and the Van C. Mow Medal.

The Freeman Scholar Award, which is presented every two years, recognizes extensive experience in fluids engineering. The recipient will be expected to make a major and comprehensive review of a coherent topic, prepare a broad statement of the state of the field, and suggest key research needs for the future. The results will be presented at the International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition and published in the ASME Journal of Fluids Engineering. The winner will receive a $10,000 honorarium and a certificate. Contact Timothy O'Hern, award chair, by e-mail at tjohern@sandia.gov to recommend someone for the award.

The Y.C. Fung Young Investigator Award, which encourages young investigators to pursue research in bioengineering, includes a $1,000 prize, a bronze medal and a certificate. Nominations should be submitted to Jay Humphrey, award chair, at Jay.humphrey@yale.edu. Candidates should be under the age of 36 and have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree.

The Patrick J. Higgins Award is presented to an individual who has contributed to the enhancement of standardization and the advancement of ASME codes, standards and conformity assessment. The winner will receive a $1,000 honorarium, a bronze medal and a certificate. Nominations should be e-mailed to Dave Viola, award chair, at Dave.viola@iapmo.org.

The winner of the H.R. Lissner Medal, which honors pioneering contributions in biomechanical research, will receive a $1,000 prize, a bronze medal and a certificate. Contact Thomas Andriacchi, award chair, by e-mail at tandriac@stanform.edu to nominate someone for this award.

The Van C. Mow Medal, recognizing meritorious contributions to the field of bioengineering, consists of a $1,000 honorarium, a bronze medal and a certificate. Candidates must have received a Ph.D. or equivalent degree between 10 and 20 years prior to June of the year of award. To submit a nomination, contact Lori Setton, award chair, at setton@duke.edu.

The nomination deadline for the Ralph Coats Roe Award, which recognizes significant contributions to understanding the engineer's worth to society, is Sept. 15. The award winner will receive a $12,000 honorarium, a gold medal and a certificate. Nominations should be submitted to Susan Skemp, award chair, by e-mail at sueskemp@gmail.com .
