Serving on the ASME Board of Governors

ASME is seeking a diverse selection of members with a high level of engagement in academic and professional organizations.

The Board of Governors (BOG), chosen from its membership, oversees the Society's activities, adhering to the Constitution, By-Laws, Society Policies, and New York State laws. It is comprised of twelve Members-at-Large, the Executive Director/CEO, and up to two Appointed Governors.

On Monday January 13, 2025, from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm EST, ASME will hold an informative session, "Pathway to Leadership: Running for the ASME Board of Governors,” to learn about the skills, traits, and qualities of the ASME Governor.


What to Expect:
  • Eligibility and Requirements: What qualifications or criteria are necessary to run for the board?
  • Nomination Process: How can individuals nominate themselves or others for board positions? What is the timeline for nominations?
  • Responsibilities of Board Members: What are the key roles and responsibilities of board members? What commitment of time and resources is expected?
  • Election Process: How are board members elected? What is the process?
  • Impact of Board Membership: How does serving on the board influence the organization and its mission? What opportunities for personal and professional growth does board membership offer?
  • Diversity and Inclusion: How is diversity considered in the board selection process? What initiatives are in place to encourage diverse candidates?
  • Q&A Session: An open forum for attendees to ask questions and address their specific concerns or interests related to board candidacy.
  • Success Stories: Examples of individuals who have successfully run for the board and how their contributions have made a difference.
  • Preparation Tips: Strategies for potential candidates to prepare their candidacy, such as networking, and understanding ASME’s goals.
  • Resources and Support: Information on resources available to assist candidates, including mentorship programs, training sessions, or informational materials.

Candidate Qualifications

  • Business acumen and sound judgment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of ASME's mission, governance, and strategic direction.
  • Understanding of a Governor's fiduciary duties.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Honesty, integrity, and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Prior relevant volunteer experience.
  • Respect for the Board process.
  • ASME Corporate Membership Grade.

Selection Process

Candidates will have multiple interviews. Invited candidates will have a final in-person interview on either June 6 or 7, 2025 during the ASME Annual Business Meeting.
