QUIZ: What Do You Know about the Panama Canal?

The Panama Canal retains its status.
The Panama Canal has been called the world’s greatest engineering project from the time it was completed in 1914. Its construction realized a long-standing dream to connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans that dated to early Spanish colonization of Central and South America. The design is a combination of canals, locks and man-made lakes that provide passage for large ocean-going vessels.
By the beginning of the 21st century, the canal was constrained by size as larger post-Panamax vessels could not squeeze through the locks. A $5.4-billion expansion large enough to fit the new ships was completed in 2016.
