Webinar to Offer an Introduction to ASME's New V&V 40 Standard

On June 4th, ASME will offer a complimentary hourlong webinar focusing on its new V&V 40-2018 — the Society’s first verification and validation (V&V) standard created specifically for medical devices. The webinar, “Introduction to the ASME V&V 40 Standard — Medical Device Evaluation Using Computational Modeling,” will be held from 12 p.m.-1 p.m. Eastern Time.

The new standard, “Assessing Credibility of Computational Modeling Through Verification and Validation: Application to Medical Devices,” assesses the credibility of computational modeling through verification and validation with application to medical devices, including endovascular and orthopedic devices, heart valves and stents. It also expands upon ASME V&V 20 and ASME V&V 10 standards, which present V&V methodologies for computational modeling of fluid dynamics, heat transfer and solid mechanics. Although developed especially for medical devices, the V&V 40 Subcommittee considers the new standard to be general enough to be applied to other disciplines.

The V&V 40 webinar is intended to help participants acquire an understanding of a conceptual framework for implementing V&V for computational modeling of medical devices; comprehend a risk-based approach to gathering evidence for supporting the credibility of a computational model; gain insights into the current regulatory view of modeling and simulation for medical devices; and discover how the new V&V 40 standard can help make medical device development more efficient in terms of time and cost.

The webinar will feature presentations from Tina M. Morrison, Ph.D., deputy director of the Division of Applied Mechanics in the FDA’s Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories and chair of the ASME V&V40 Subcommittee; Marc Horner, Ph.D., principal engineer at ANSYS Inc. and vice chair of the ASME V&V40 Subcommittee; and Jeffrey Bischoff, Ph.D., director of biomechanics at Zimmer Biomet and vice chair of the ASME V&V40 Subcommittee.
